A "Million Little Pieces" author, James Frey spent many weeks on the best sellers list after Oprah Winfrey announced that his book had been chosen as one of the Oprah Book Club selections. The author was thrilled by his literary success, but did not realize that his entire world would come crashing down when he was exposed as a fraud. James Frey marketed "A Million Little Pieces" as a memoir, rather than a fiction novel which is what it truly was.
James Frey first appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about his Million Little Pieces memoir, acting the entire time as though the book had been written based on his personal experiences. Once it became public knowledge that James Frey's book was not a memoir, but a fiction novel, he was invited back on The Oprah Show for a confrontational interview. Many of his previous fans turned against the author after deciding he was a liar. He was sued by many different people who claimed that they had faced some sort of loss due to the authors dishonesty, and refunded book purchases for displeased readers. The media attention was relentless and James Frey ended up moving his family to France where they could live peacefully. At one point Oprah apologized to James Frey for her part in creating a media frenzy.
In his May 2011 interview James Frey talked to Oprah about how he felt about the interview and its after-effects. James Frey told Oprah that he originally decided to market the fiction novel as a memoir when he found out that publishers were not interested in a fictional book. By the time Oprah chose A Million Little Pieces as an Oprah Book Club selection, Frey felt that he was in way too deep, and didn't know how he could reveal the truth. During his second Oprah Show interview he felt steamrolled. Although some people believed Oprah was too hard on Frey, others believed he got what he deserved. After the second interview, James Frey had an artist friend create a painting that depicted his Oprah Show experience and called it "Public Stoning." The piece of artwork hangs in his apartment today. The second half of the May 2011 Oprah Show interview with James Frey will air tomorrow.
