Charla Nash was attacked and nearly killed by her friend Sandra Herold's 14-year-old pet chimpanzee "Travis." Travis the chimpanzee attacked Charla Nash on February 16, 2009 while she was over at Sandra's Connecticut house visiting.
Nash didn't have a chance against the 200 pound animal who viciously ripped off her face during a brutal 12 minute attack.
Sandra Herold called 911 for help and began stabbing the chimp in an attempt to stop the attack. When the police arrived on the scene the chimp was shot and killed.
Although Charla Nash survived the attack her face was severely damaged. Most of the bones in her face were broken and her lips, nose, and eyes had been torn off, essentially leaving her without a face. Her hands were also ripped off by the chimp during the attack.
The trained chimp had starred in TV commercials for popular companies such as Old Navy and Coca-Cola.
According to various news reports the chimps owner allegedly fed him steak, lobster, Italian food, and desserts at the dinner table, and the chimpanzee was even given wine and Xanax on occasion.
Travis may have "snapped" because he had Lyme disease, which his owner was unaware of.
The Nash family is suing the Herold's for 50 million dollars, and I personally hope that Charla Nash and her 17-year-old daughter are awarded every penny of it.
